Advanced HVDC testing solutions to ensure reliability in long-distance power transmission.

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission is playing an increasingly crucial role in today’s energy landscape. As vast amounts of electricity from remote renewable energy sources must be transported over long distances, the share of HVDC systems continues to grow rapidly. Any failure in transmission lines can lead to significant outage costs, with serious impacts on project cash flows. Consequently, system operators and equipment manufacturers require testing under the most demanding operating conditions.

KEMA Labs operates the largest HVDC test laboratories in the world, offering a comprehensive range of testing services. We conduct development tests on HVDC cable systems up to 1,200 kV DC, along with type and prequalification tests. We also test HVDC thyristor valves, and all other HVDC equipment ensuring equipment reliability before field deployment.

Our facilities include flexible testing space, divided into 10 independent test bays, each adaptable to specific client needs.

Key capabilities and ratings:

  • HVDC generators: up to 1,600 kV
  • HVDC Current Generators: For DC Current heating of Submarine Cables
  • Impulse generator: 3,000 kV peak, 300 kJ
  • Advanced heating/cooling control system with wireless cable temperature measurement
